Finally the much anticipated sequel to one of my favourite
books this year London Belongs to Me was finally released last Thursday in the
shape of London Can You Wait? So once again here is my ramble on what I
thought, avoiding spoilers.
I am so glad to be back in this story and seeing how
everyone is doing a year later. Let’s start with Alex, I feel she has become
more confident within herself in this book, which is lovely to see. She again
shows that regardless of how wonderful life seems for some people we are all
human and bad things happen but things will be ok in the end. She goes through
very real emotions again her anxiety is still debilitating which a lot of people
experience. I love Alex even more in this book because she puts up with a lot
and got through it. Onto Mark, I adore him in the first book, in this he’s the
big star his career has gone mental, but he’s struggling to juggle everything
and that puts a strain on his and Alex’s relationship. Also, we get to learn
more about him in this book and his family and it was so lovely to learn about
him even though it wasn’t completely happy but we get to understand why he is
the way he is. We have the amazing duo back in the shape of Freddie and Lucy,
who were the best friends a person could ever wish for again. I serious want
these two as my friends they are so supportive and lovely and straight talking
it’s brilliant. They are there when both Alex and Mark need them and they do
what they think it right to help and take decisions made in their stride. Harry
is still around which is lovely he’s not as big a part as the first one but
he’s a lot better in this book since the events of the first book. The usual
suspects of Alex’s family in Manchester turn up and are fantastic as ever. We
have one new main character called Simon who is amazing as Freddie’s fiancée he
fits in the group perfectly as the voice of reason. We have other characters
who twist the story for the worst but if I explained that would give away too
much.
The story is amazing set a year later and spans a year in
story, I think this is perfectly timed we still get enough idea of what has
happened across the time frame without getting bored. This story warmed my
heart then broke my heart on several different occasions then pieced it back
together again. I think I spent the last couple of chapters just crying because
of the rollercoaster of emotions. One thing I think that is very important
about this book is its awareness of mental health, as we see characters
struggle with their mental health and we see them come full circle in getting
help, which is amazing. I think both this and London Belongs to Me just makes
me feel like I will get there everything takes time and problems will sort
themselves out, everything will be ok in the end. Also, this story is a bit
more grown up so reflects that these characters have grown up from the first
book even if it’s just a year on. Also, these books bring out the geek in me
because Jacquelyn’s theatre preciseness is incredible I love it and appreciate
the efforts she has put in to be accurately correct it is amazing. I also love
the fact she mentioned my favourite theatre, the Garrick, in this book. I loved
it one of the best sequels I have read. I never want to stop reading
about these characters. Loved it, loved it, loved it.
Highly recommend
Until Next Time
