Book Recommendations for Disney Fans

Me and the lovely Hannah from Courage and Kindness have teamed up to bring you our book recommendations for Disney lovers. I have chosen books that have a magical element to them and that I have enjoyed. So, without further or do here are the four books I have chosen to share.

The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer

This book is about a set of twins called Connor and Alex who discover that a book their grandmother has given them is a magic book that takes them to a place called The Land of Stories. We follow the story of them finding a way to get home and along the way they meet all our favourite fairytale characters such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and many more. Along the way the twins find out that they are connected to this land a lot more closely than they thought. I love these books because they are so well thought out and to see all these amazingly magical fairytales come together in one book is magical. This is also a series of six books each one more dramatic than the last, I would highly recommend. Also for you Glee fans, yes, the guy who plays Kurt is the author of these books.

Goodreads synopsis:
Alex and Conner Bailey's world is about to change, in this fast-paced adventure that uniquely combines our modern day world with the enchanting realm of classic fairy tales.
The Land of Stories tells the tale of twins Alex and Conner. Through the mysterious powers of a cherished book of stories, they leave their world behind and find themselves in a foreign land full of wonder and magic where they come face-to-face with the fairy tale characters they grew up reading about.

But after a series of encounters with witches, wolves, goblins, and trolls alike, getting back home is going to be harder than they thought.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This book is the epitome of magic from the start, this is about a travelling circus that only appears at night and we follow three characters, two for who the circus has a bigger meaning for them as they are involved in a magical contest to the death and one who we see fall in love with the circus because it’s a sense of escape and eventually the lives of these three characters soon weave to make an unexpected ending to the book. The detail to imagery is amazing as it makes you feel like you are in the circus, weaving into the various tents and watching everything play out. It’s a great story of drama, magic and romance.

Goodreads Synopsis:
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.
True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.
Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart

On the Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher

I love Carrie Hope Fletcher and she loves Disney so it felt right to include one of her books in this list. On the Other Side has some magical realism in and that is why I recommend this book. We have this lady who has died peacefully who wants to get into her own personal heaven and to do this she must right some wrongs in her life so she gets sent back into her 27-year-old body and we learn about the three secrets she has kept her entire life which ties in with the magic. I also love this book because it wasn’t as straightforward as I thought it was going to be. This book has romance, heart break and magic and it really gives you that emotion.

Goodreads Synopsis:
A love story like no other, this is the debut novel from Carrie Hope Fletcher, author of the Sunday Times No. 1 bestseller All I Know Now.
Evie Snow is eighty-two when she quietly passes away in her sleep, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. It's the way most people wish to leave the world but when Evie reaches the door of her own private heaven, she finds that she's become her twenty-seven-year-old self and the door won't open.
Evie's soul must be light enough to pass through so she needs to get rid of whatever is making her soul heavy. For Evie, this means unburdening herself of the three secrets that have weighed her down for over fifty years, so she must find a way to reveal them before it's too late. As Evie begins the journey of a lifetime, she learns more about life and love than she ever thought possible, and somehow , some way, she may also find her way back to her long lost love . . .
On the Other Side will transport you to a world that is impossible to forget. Powerful, magical and utterly romantic, this is a love story like no other from everyone's favourite 'big sister', Carrie Hope Fletcher.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

The last book on this list and I think Hannah might have picked this too. This is dubbed a Beauty and the Beast retelling it’s a story that involves humans and fae. We follow this girl who kills a fae and as punishment must go and live in the fae world with one of the leaders who can shape shift into a beast. Throughout the story we see her break down her captures walls and her hate turns into love. However. Things are not that simple and there are bigger things at play here that could affect the blossoming romance. This is also part of a series that develops quite a lot and doesn’t go where you think it will. It’s a good series that I would highly recommend.

Goodreads Synopsis:
Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price ...
Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre's presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

So that was my book recommendations for Disney fans, don't forget to check out Hannah's post too.
Until next time

Review- Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Tour

This weekend I went and watched the tour cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. I’ve not seen this show before but it has been on my list for a long time. I’d only heard one or two songs before so I was going in with no ideas of what it was like and I found it very enjoyable. Background This is based on the true story of 16 year old Jamie New who dreams of being a drag queen as well as wearing a dress to his prom. Throughout the show we see Jamie go through a journey of self discovery which has so many highs and lows. Along the way we meet people who are and aren’t supportive of his dream and how much prejudice he has to contend with. The show first opened on the West End in 2017 and is currently on its second UK tour. Cast The cast of this show were fabulous, unfortunately didn't get to see Ivano Turco play Jamie, Finton Flynn was incredible in those red heels. He portrayed the emotion of playing Jamie perfectly as well showing the young silly ...

Carrie Hope Fletcher Book Signing

Hey Guys On Monday 12th September I attended Carrie Hope Fletcher's book signing for her fiction book On The Other Side at the Glee Club in Birmingham. This is the second time I have met Carrie and once again she was an absolute pleasure to listen too. I attended this event on my own, and I must stay that I think the Glee Club and the Waterstones team planned and hosted the event so well considering there was 350 people that turned up to this event and each one of those people had bought a ticket and a book. We were seated quite early as doors opened at 6 and I was in a seat by 6:30 with the event starting at 7, however there were people who turned up 10 minutes before the event and had to stand up because of all the seats that were taken which gives you an idea of how many people attended this event. Before the signing of the actual books, there was a 40 minute question and answer session with a representative from Waterstones asking Carrie questions about her book, being...

Review: Beauty and the Beast Musical

In March, me and two of my friends went to see Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favourite Disney films and I was excited to see what this interpretation had in stall. The fairy-tale was first adapted into the much-loved Disney animated film in 1991 and became a Broadway production in 1993. The show opens with the familiar voice of Angela Lansbury and the enchanting music that we all recognise and with the help of the beautiful rose projection we are transported into the magic. Director Matt West leaves the story exactly how it is, only adding extra bits of comedy here and there which the audience engage with easily. The cast all suit their characters and portray them to perfection. Grace Swaby- Moore, understudy to Courtney Stapleton, was the embodiment of Belle, she captured the innocence of the character and belted the songs to perfection. Shaq Taylor portrayed the Beast will emotion and ferocity when needed. His voice ...
