Review: Heathers the Musical

On the 20th October I finally saw Heathers the Musical at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London. After an amazing sell out run at The Other Palace back in September Heathers made the big West End transfer to the Haymarket for a strict 12 week run and they haven’t looked back.

September 1st 1989 and Veronica Sawyer is starting her senior year of high school. All she wants is to get through unscathed and for people to leave her alone. She ends up helping out the it girls of the school called the Heathers, made up of Heather Chandler who is the leader of the group, Heather Duke and Heather McNamara. Due to these actions she is taken in by the Heathers and this is the ideal situation because it means everyone will leave her alone. However, the Heathers are not nice people and Veronica gets sucked into this. Then she meets the mysterious JD who convinces her to get back at the bad people around her and takes drastic actions, which opens a whole can of worms that gets progressively worse and an abusive relationship. Eventually Veronica stands up for herself and realises the good in life.
Unfortunately due to illness Carrie Hope Fletcher didn’t appear as Veronica, instead we got her understudy Olivia Moore and she’s was insane, she was so funny and her voice was incredible, it was so clear and strong and matched everyone else perfectly without overpowering them, I cannot believe this is her debut West End show. Jamie Muscato was amazing as JD, he blew away me expectations of him, he really transformed into the character and presented him how he is meant to be, also he has a beautiful singing voice. I loved the Heathers, Jodie Steele, T’Shan Williams and Sophie Isaacs, they were perfect Heathers, also Jodie Steele in particular her voice was incredible I loved it. All the rest of the side characters such as Martha (Jenny O’Leary), Ram (Dominic Anderson), Kurt Kelly (Christopher Chung) we’re amazing. Also Rebecca Lock, Nathan Amzi and Jon Boydon are amazing for playing more than one character throughout the show and keeping it up. The ensemble are also incredible as well, making up the different personalities of high school.

My favourite thing in this show is the music, the songs and the voices were incredible. My favourite song had to Dead Girl Walking, it’s such an empowering song and what happens in the show at this point is pivotal for Veronica. I also loved the Heathers singing Candy Store it’s such a catchy song and we get a good idea of what the Heathers are like. Seventeen is one of the best songs between JD and Veronica when all they want is too be normal. Shine a Light is a fun song especially if you are “Steve”. Each main character gets a song which is great because they can show there singing and have fun.

I have never been to a show before with this much energy in the crowd, before the show and during the interval they play 80s music which people know and gets you ready for the show. After every song there is cheering and clapping, after key points in the show there is the same reaction. It was also really funny without going over the top which made it more enjoyable. It’s an amazing energy that’s so positive, you can tell everyone was enjoying it and majority were on their feet the minute it finished.

This is show explores a lot of different themes that affect people in everyday life, not just teenagers and it shows that everything will be ok in the end. I loved this show so much, it was everything I wanted and more. Automatically into my top 5 shows I’ve ever seen it was that good. I’d had a pretty crappy week going into watching this show and it instantly made me feel better. I cannot wait for the cast recording I am buzzing for it.

It’s on at the Royal Haymarket theatre until the end of November, see whilst you can, get your tickets here.

Until next time

Stacey

Review- Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Tour

This weekend I went and watched the tour cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. I’ve not seen this show before but it has been on my list for a long time. I’d only heard one or two songs before so I was going in with no ideas of what it was like and I found it very enjoyable. Background This is based on the true story of 16 year old Jamie New who dreams of being a drag queen as well as wearing a dress to his prom. Throughout the show we see Jamie go through a journey of self discovery which has so many highs and lows. Along the way we meet people who are and aren’t supportive of his dream and how much prejudice he has to contend with. The show first opened on the West End in 2017 and is currently on its second UK tour. Cast The cast of this show were fabulous, unfortunately didn't get to see Ivano Turco play Jamie, Finton Flynn was incredible in those red heels. He portrayed the emotion of playing Jamie perfectly as well showing the young silly ...

Carrie Hope Fletcher Book Signing

Hey Guys On Monday 12th September I attended Carrie Hope Fletcher's book signing for her fiction book On The Other Side at the Glee Club in Birmingham. This is the second time I have met Carrie and once again she was an absolute pleasure to listen too. I attended this event on my own, and I must stay that I think the Glee Club and the Waterstones team planned and hosted the event so well considering there was 350 people that turned up to this event and each one of those people had bought a ticket and a book. We were seated quite early as doors opened at 6 and I was in a seat by 6:30 with the event starting at 7, however there were people who turned up 10 minutes before the event and had to stand up because of all the seats that were taken which gives you an idea of how many people attended this event. Before the signing of the actual books, there was a 40 minute question and answer session with a representative from Waterstones asking Carrie questions about her book, being...

Review: Beauty and the Beast Musical

In March, me and two of my friends went to see Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favourite Disney films and I was excited to see what this interpretation had in stall. The fairy-tale was first adapted into the much-loved Disney animated film in 1991 and became a Broadway production in 1993. The show opens with the familiar voice of Angela Lansbury and the enchanting music that we all recognise and with the help of the beautiful rose projection we are transported into the magic. Director Matt West leaves the story exactly how it is, only adding extra bits of comedy here and there which the audience engage with easily. The cast all suit their characters and portray them to perfection. Grace Swaby- Moore, understudy to Courtney Stapleton, was the embodiment of Belle, she captured the innocence of the character and belted the songs to perfection. Shaq Taylor portrayed the Beast will emotion and ferocity when needed. His voice ...
