Birthday weekend in London

On Saturday 2nd March it was my 25th birthday and to celebrate me and Darren went to London from 1st-4th staying at the Travelodge in Wembley the High Road one which is directly above Wembley Central Tube station. We’ve stayed here quite a few times it’s cheap and convenient being a above the tube station and with Bakerloo line trains into Central London quite frequently. We got there late on the Friday so not enough time to do anything.

On the Saturday we woke up early and I opened all my birthday cards and got my surprise present from Darren which was tickets to see Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre. I have seen it before but it is closing in August this year and I wanted to see it again before it closed. After grabbing some breakfast in the hotel we took the tube into Central London starting with the Disney Store on Oxford Street which is one of the best stores so much stuff in there that you don’t really get in the others, I didn’t buy anything in there. We then walked down Oxford Street towards Primark, with a quick stop off in Lush. In Primark I bought some Mickey denim shorts that are all over social media now and a Winnie the Pooh nightie, however Primark sizing is ridiculous I bought the shorts in a size 10 and they are huge in the waist but fine in the leg, very strange. We decided to try and walk back to Piccadilly Circus but got lost and found ourselves in Holborn so we got the tube to Piccadilly from there. For lunch we went to The Theatre Cafe on Shaftesbury Avenue opposite Les Mis. The Theatre Cafe is one of my favourite places in London the food is lovely and it is the perfect place for a musical theatre fan. I had a red velvet tray bake and Diet Coke whilst they were playing Heathers the Musical soundtrack which came out the day before. I was in my element and the cake was really lovely. We took a walk around went to Covent Garden and I went into the small Moomin shop there and bought a pin for my board. We then decided that we wanted to do the Cable Cars at the O2 arena so went got on a tube and a DLR and went to Royal Victoria where the other dock is and got on towards the O2. I have a love, hate relationship with the cable cars I love the idea but then I hate being that high in a glass bubble but the view is amazing.

Once we made it over the other side we went back to the hotel to refresh and get ready for dinner and Aladdin. We had dinner at the Angus Steakhouse on Coventry Street, there are quite a few dotted around London. We had Garlic Bread for starter which was pre cut and still warm it was lovely. For main Darren had steak which was lovely and soft and I had a chicken skewer that had pepper and onion with it and chips. It was the chicken was a bit dry I think I’d have a steak next time but these things are trial and error. Then for dessert Darren had Tiramisu and I had Malteser cheesecake which has to the best cheesecake I’ve ever had it had Malteser inside and out.

Then it was time for Aladdin which was incredible so much better than I remembered, definately my favourite musical. With the tickets there was a £5 off merchandise voucher when you spend £20 so I bought a small lamps ornament I wanted the big full size but couldn’t afford it. I also picked up the pin badge for my collection which is so pretty. After the show we headed back to the hotel.

On Sunday we had no plans so it was a make it up as we go along day, after grabbing a Costa breakfast we headed to Kings Cross to see if we could get into the Harry Potter 9 3/4 shop but unfortunately it was very busy and they had a queueing system in place which I wasn’t prepared to wait in because I didn’t necessarily want to buy only have a look so I didn’t see the point of waiting in the queue. So we headed towards Westfield shopping centre in Shepheards Bush and spent a couple of hours around there where we bought a new Winnie the Pooh for our vast collection, we are slowly running out of room. We tried Yo Sushi for the first time for lunch which was a very different experience and I’d try it again, also as a Cineworld Unlimited card holder I got discount off the bill as well. We went back and dropped our new Pooh off at the hotel and then decided to go and find the Moomin shop in Camden Town.

I have never been to Camden and it was a good experience walking around the stalls and the Lock it was so vibrantly coloured and we found the Moomin shop eventually.

We headed to Southbank after and attempted a walk round but couldn’t due to the weather, we got some chips from a little van by the London Eye they weren’t the best and very overpriced. The rain got heavier so we went into the Southbank centre to dry off and grab a drink. Once the rain had eased we caught the tube into Central London and went for a walk around again visiting Kingdom of Sweets as we always do. For dinner we went to Nandos in Covent Garden which we dub are our favourite Nando’s, we are that obsessed. Darren had his usual of hot half a chicken, chips and corn on the cob and I had something different which was a plainish chicken pitta with chips and coleslaw. We still had quite a bit of time on our hands so we decided to go on a mini Pokemon walk around the Tower of London. Before this we decided we wanted to try a doughnuts from Doughnut Time so we went and got those from the pop up on Shaftesbury Avenue we both had a Robert D’Noreo which is a doughnut with Oreos on basically, Darren had his straightaway whilst I left mine until we got back. For some odd reason we have only been around that part of London at nighttime never in the daytime but you get some lovely views of the Tower and of Tower Bridge and London itself all lit up at nighttime.

We then headed back and had a drink in the hotel before packing up to come back home on the Monday. I also tried my doughnut and I wasn’t impressed the icing kept falling off and the filling seemed to be in only one half of the doughnut which was disappointing.

Our train wasn’t due until 10 past 1 from Marylebone so Monday morning we had a bit of time to kill after having a mini lie in so we decided to go to Paddington station and go in the Paddington Bear shop and see what was around. We went in the shop and I got another pin for my board, then we grabbed some lunch from McDonalds and decided to try and walk to Marylebone which wasn’t simple, we made it to Edgeware Road and I gave up and we got a tube. Then it was time to go home.

I had such an amazing weekend away for my birthday, Aladdin was an amazing surprise and it was nice to explore different areas of London. I think we went on nearly every tube line and walked so much it was so much fun.

Review- Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Tour

This weekend I went and watched the tour cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. I’ve not seen this show before but it has been on my list for a long time. I’d only heard one or two songs before so I was going in with no ideas of what it was like and I found it very enjoyable. Background This is based on the true story of 16 year old Jamie New who dreams of being a drag queen as well as wearing a dress to his prom. Throughout the show we see Jamie go through a journey of self discovery which has so many highs and lows. Along the way we meet people who are and aren’t supportive of his dream and how much prejudice he has to contend with. The show first opened on the West End in 2017 and is currently on its second UK tour. Cast The cast of this show were fabulous, unfortunately didn't get to see Ivano Turco play Jamie, Finton Flynn was incredible in those red heels. He portrayed the emotion of playing Jamie perfectly as well showing the young silly ...

Carrie Hope Fletcher Book Signing

Hey Guys On Monday 12th September I attended Carrie Hope Fletcher's book signing for her fiction book On The Other Side at the Glee Club in Birmingham. This is the second time I have met Carrie and once again she was an absolute pleasure to listen too. I attended this event on my own, and I must stay that I think the Glee Club and the Waterstones team planned and hosted the event so well considering there was 350 people that turned up to this event and each one of those people had bought a ticket and a book. We were seated quite early as doors opened at 6 and I was in a seat by 6:30 with the event starting at 7, however there were people who turned up 10 minutes before the event and had to stand up because of all the seats that were taken which gives you an idea of how many people attended this event. Before the signing of the actual books, there was a 40 minute question and answer session with a representative from Waterstones asking Carrie questions about her book, being...

Review: Beauty and the Beast Musical

In March, me and two of my friends went to see Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favourite Disney films and I was excited to see what this interpretation had in stall. The fairy-tale was first adapted into the much-loved Disney animated film in 1991 and became a Broadway production in 1993. The show opens with the familiar voice of Angela Lansbury and the enchanting music that we all recognise and with the help of the beautiful rose projection we are transported into the magic. Director Matt West leaves the story exactly how it is, only adding extra bits of comedy here and there which the audience engage with easily. The cast all suit their characters and portray them to perfection. Grace Swaby- Moore, understudy to Courtney Stapleton, was the embodiment of Belle, she captured the innocence of the character and belted the songs to perfection. Shaq Taylor portrayed the Beast will emotion and ferocity when needed. His voice ...
